Todays modern vehicles come equipped with an onboard computer diagnostic system (OBD) that monitors your vehicle’s operations at all times. The OBD system continually analyzes the status of the vehicle’s exhaust system, gas tank, transmission and many other components. This high-tech and sufisticated system receives information from the various sensors throughtout your vehcile and makes adjustments that enable your car to operate smoothly and efficently. This means the monitors can detect anything from a loose fuel cap to a clogged catalytic converter. If a problem or fault is detected it triggers the check engine light to come on to warn the driver or the issue If something’s going wrong with your car or engine, your onboard computer can tell you about it. If the computer senses something is wrong with one of your car’s systems, it will turn on a dashboard light, like “ABS Brakes” or something less specific, like “Check Engine. If this ever happens to you while you are driving, no matter what the waring light is, the first thing you should do is pull up and stop your vheicle in a safe spot. You should not keep driving if your vheicle is displaying an illuminated warning light as it can result in very expensive repairs.     Electrical Testing

    As vehicle electrical systems become more complex and critical to a vehicle’s operation and performance, it is increasingly important to check the electrical system within your car. Your car’s electrical system should be completely checked and tested every two years or whenever serviced for any type of driveability problem.     Warning lights and what they mean

    Oil pressure warning light

    This light should illuminate when the ignition is switched on and should extinguish as soon as the engine starts. If the light stays on after starting or illuminates during a journey, stop immediately, switch off the engine and check the engine oil level as it could be low. If the level is low, top up straight away as you might have an oil leak.

     

    Battery charge warning light

    This light should illuminate when the ignition is switched on and should turn off as soon as the engine starts. If it does not turn on at all, or if it comes on while driving, your battery may not be charging correctly or there is a fault with your charging system.

    Brake system warning light

    This light will remain illuminated when the handbrake is engaged. Illumination after releasing the handbrake may indicate low brake fluid level. You should check your brake fluid level frequently to ensure there is no further rapid loss of fluid.

     

    Engine management warning light

    Illuminates when the ignition is switched on. It should extinguish as soon as the engine starts. If it illuminates with the engine running, it indicates a malfunction with the engine management system. Have this checked as soon as possible. If itflashes when driving, reduce the vehicle speed immediately until the light illuminates constantly. If it continues to flash, avoid heavy acceleration and high engine speed, stop the vehicle and have it checked immediately. If it is safe to do so, try stopping the vehicle, switching off the engine, wait two minutes, then restarting the engine to reset the engine management system.

    ABS warning light

    When the ignition is switched on, the light illuminates briefly to confirm that the system is operational. If it illuminates when driving, it indicates a malfunction. Have this checked as soon as possible. Normal braking (without ABS) will be generally be maintained and many cars will be safe to drive on, but some will not – check your handbook for further information or advice. Brake system and ABS warning lights. If both warning lights illuminate at the same time when driving, stop the vehicle as soon as it is safe to do so as you could have a major braking malfunction.
